Cali’s LGBT Celebs Speak OUT
Some of the more well known LGBT celebs have been speaking out about the California Supreme Court ruling which upheld the discrimination of Prop 8.
Melissa Etheridge, who didnt’ marry her partner during the brief period same-sex marriages were legal in California, said her and her partner were now in limbo after the court’s ruling. The 47 year old entertainer stated on October of 2008, that she and actress Tammy Lynn Michaels planned to marry to legalize a ceremony they had in 2003, but they never went through with the wedding mainly because they were concerned it could be annulled if Prop 8 held.
“I wanted to wait until I knew that when I step into City Hall and I’m there with my wife and that clerk signs that piece of paper, I want to know that it’s free and clear. My wife and I consider ourselves to be married, we would like that to be recognized some day. What if this was the 1960s and it was like, ‘OK these interracial marriages can be married but these can’t.’ You can’t put this back in the bottle. Who will be happy tonight? How do I explain this to my children?”
Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, whose did marry her partner, actress Portia DeRossi in August of 2008 said:
“One day, when everyone is treated with full equality, we’ll look back and realize how wrong this was.”
George Takei, who played Sulu on the 1960’s TV hit TV series “Star Trek” has also publicly spoken out against the court’s decision. Takei and longtime partner Brad Altman married in September of 2008. Takei stated:
“Nothing’s changed with our marriage, but I think the California Supreme Court has changed. This ruling is a decision to be indecisive.”
